Hazelnut also called filbert, cobnut, or hazel, genus of about 15 species of shrubs and trees in the birch family and the edible nuts they produce. The plants are native to the north temperate zone. Several species are of commercial importance for their nuts, and a number are valuable hedgerow and ornamental trees grown for their colourful autumnal foliage.
Hazelnuts are true nuts. The fruit arises from a compound ovary and does not open to release its single seed.
